Your child slides the maths book across the table, and the evening is already over. You have not even started, and both of you know how the next hour goes. If that is your house on a Tuesday night, you are in extremely ordinary company, and the situation is far more fixable than it feels.

The phrase “I hate maths” is almost never a verdict on ability. It is a child telling you that maths has become the subject where they feel stupid, and no child willingly walks back into a room where they feel stupid. Change that feeling and the effort usually follows. This article explains what is really happening, then gives you a four week plan you can actually run at home.

1Why does my child hate maths?

Children hate maths because maths is the one school subject where being lost is instantly visible. In reading or art there is a comfortable middle ground. In maths the answer is right or wrong, everyone finishes at a different time, and a child who is behind knows it within about ninety seconds. Repeat that experience a few hundred times and the child does not conclude “this topic is hard”. They conclude “I am not a maths person”, which is a much heavier thing to carry.

There is a second layer, and it is physical. Maths anxiety is a well documented phenomenon in primary aged children, and it is not simply dislike. Researchers have found that anxiety about maths eats into the working memory a child needs to hold numbers in their head, which means an anxious child scores below what they genuinely know. One study of six to eight year olds found that anxious children fell back on finger counting instead of the mental strategies they had already learned, and that this shift in strategy explained much of the drop in their accuracy. The knowledge was there. The bandwidth was not.

2The five real reasons behind “I hate maths”

In our experience across thousands of trial classes, “I hate maths” almost always traces back to one of five causes. Work out which one you are looking at, because the fix is different for each.

One missing brick. This is the most common by far. A child who never fully understood place value will struggle with every topic built on top of it, right through to decimals and long division. They look like they are bad at maths. They are actually excellent at maths built on a foundation that has a gap in it.

Speed pressure. Timed tables tests and racing classmates convince a slow but careful thinker that they are weak. Speed is a byproduct of fluency, not a route to it, but children read slowness as failure.

Copied attitude. Children absorb what adults say about maths. A cheerful “oh, I was hopeless at maths too” feels like solidarity, and lands as permission to give up. Researchers at the University of Chicago found that children of maths anxious parents learned less maths across a school year, but only when those parents helped with homework frequently. The anxiety travelled through the homework table.

The rule with no reason. A child taught to flip and multiply when dividing fractions, with no idea why, is memorising noise. Noise is boring and it does not survive a tricky question.

Nothing but correction. If every maths interaction a child has ends with someone pointing out what is wrong, the subject becomes the place where they are found wanting. That is enough to make anyone hate it.

3Week 1: end the fight, not the maths

In week one you change nothing about the maths and everything about the atmosphere. The goal for these seven days is a single one: your child does a small amount of maths without an argument. Nothing else counts this week.

Set a fixed, short slot, ten to fifteen minutes, at a time your child is not exhausted. Use a timer and stop when it rings, even mid question. Children push back against homework partly because it feels endless, and a visible finish line removes most of that resistance. Sit nearby but do not lean over the page. If they get stuck, the only two sentences you need are “show me what you tried” and “what would you do if the number was smaller?” Both hand the thinking back to them.

One more thing, and it matters more than it sounds. Stop saying you were bad at maths. Swap it for something honest and useful, such as “I found this hard too, so let us work out what it is asking.” You do not have to be good at maths to be helpful. You have to be calm about it.

4Week 2: find the last thing they knew cold

The single most useful thing you can do in week two is go backwards until your child is fluent again, then move forward from there. This feels wrong to most parents, because school is moving ahead and dropping back seems like losing ground. It is the opposite. Practising the topic that is currently failing simply repeats the confusion. Practising the topic underneath it removes the cause.

Find the level by working down, not up. If long division is a disaster, test simple division facts. If those wobble, test times tables. If those wobble, test skip counting. Keep going until your child answers quickly and confidently, then start there. A ten year old doing confident nine year old maths for a week is not a step backwards. It is a child rebuilding a floor to stand on.

Write down what you find, in one line, so you know exactly what you are working on. Something like “fine with tables up to six, breaks down at seven and eight, so division is guesswork.” That single sentence is worth more than a month of general worry.

5Week 3: make maths something they can see and touch

Children understand maths they can picture, and forget maths they can only recite. Week three is about turning abstract symbols back into something visible, which is exactly how Singapore’s primary maths teaching works with its concrete, pictorial and then abstract sequence. Fractions become a chocolate bar you actually break. Ratios become two rows of coins on the table. Word problems become a drawing before they become a sum.

Try this with the topic your child is stuck on. Ask them to draw it before calculating anything. Most children who cannot solve a word problem can draw the situation correctly, and the moment the drawing exists the maths often becomes obvious to them. If they cannot draw it, you have found the real problem, and it is a comprehension problem rather than a calculation problem.

This is also the week to bring maths off the page entirely. Doubling a recipe, splitting a restaurant bill, working out how many minutes until the show starts, comparing two prices per hundred grams in the supermarket. None of it looks like homework, all of it is number sense, and children who resist worksheets will often reason happily out loud in a shop.

6Week 4: rebuild the story they tell about themselves

By week four your job is to make your child say something different about themselves, out loud, and believe it. Attitude usually shifts before marks do, and the attitude is what protects the next two years of school. So spend this week collecting evidence and showing it to them.

Keep the first page they did in week one. Put it next to a page from week four and let them see the difference themselves. Praise the specific thing rather than the child, because “you checked your working before you answered, that is what strong students do” gives them something they can repeat, while “you are so clever” gives them something to be afraid of losing. Let them teach you a method they have understood, since explaining is the fastest way to consolidate learning and it puts the child in the expert’s chair for once.

And say the sentence you want them to inherit: not “you are a maths person” but “you get better at maths by working at it, and I have watched you do exactly that this month.”

7What if four weeks is not enough?

If four calm weeks change nothing, the gap is probably wider than home practice can close, and that is a signal to bring in help rather than a reason to push harder. Warning signs worth acting on include a child who understands a method with you and cannot reproduce it a day later, one who cries or physically avoids maths, or one who is two or more years behind on the basics of number.

One to one teaching helps here in a way that a class of thirty simply cannot. A tutor working with one child can find the exact missing brick in a session or two, teach at the child’s pace instead of the curriculum’s pace, and let them ask the question they would never raise in front of classmates. That last point is underrated. Most children who hate maths have a question they have been too embarrassed to ask for years.

Simple things you can try at home this week

Use a timer and honour it. Ten minutes that always ends on time beats forty minutes that always ends in tears. Stop when it rings, even mid question.

Ask “how did you get that?” for right answers too. If you only ask when they are wrong, the question becomes an accusation. Ask it for correct answers and it becomes curiosity.

Shrink the numbers. When a child is stuck on 384 divided by 12, ask them the same question with 8 divided by 2. Once they see the shape of it, put the big numbers back.

Keep a mistakes page, not a mistakes lecture. One notebook page per week where errors get rewritten correctly. Children stop fearing mistakes once mistakes have a job to do.
